‘Galaxy’ is a thornless, semi-erect, early season blackberry that produces large yields of very firm and excellent-flavored fruit. ‘Galaxy’ is higher yielding and has larger, better flavored, and/or firmer fruit than current early varieties.
Should be well suited to production in the early season. Although ‘Galaxy’ is expected to be adapted to areas where other semi-erect blackberries are successful (e.g., ‘Chester Thornless’, ‘Triple Crown’) it should be tested on a moderate scale in colder regions before being widely planted (zones 5-6). These plants are available in 2023 as plugs- small, 6-12″ tall plants with a container-grown root system. CANNOT SHIP TO CA, OR.
“People who’ve tasted ‘Galaxy’ have detected hints of blueberry, mint and grape,” One of the developers, Peterson said.
The second blackberry release, Galaxy, also has Triple Crown as a parent and inherited similar traits, with the firmer skin of Eclipse. But it produces a few days earlier than Eclipse. Galaxy’s berries are slightly larger than those of Eclipse with dark-colored fruit.
