An exciting brand new pawpaw variety exclusive to PHN!  Delicious, smooth flavor and perfect firm, yet creamy custard texture.  Flavor is reminiscent of vanilla wafers, graham crackers and marshmallow, with slight citrusy tones.  Some even think it has a 'vanilla cream popsicle' like flavor. 'Susquehanna' parentage makes this an elite hybrid with outstanding quality.  Excellent eating quality with many other superior characteristics described below.  The evaluation name for this selection was 'R8'.

PHN Seraphim meets all the criteria of our Elite PHN pawpaw breeding and selection program from which this cultivar was selected:

-Great flavor and texture - no goopy or loose texture - nice firm custard. Flavor is complex and well defined with unusual and delectable flavor set.

-Low seed weight - about 5%, sometimes less, which is outstanding.

-Large but not necessarily massive fruits. Average weight is 293 grams or 9 ounces, which is in line with our size preferences. Some have gotten to 394 grams / 13 ounces, so it's likely they could reach one pound occasionally. 

-Freestone Seeds - no weird seed sacks; seeds come out clean and easy.

-Strong mid season production (Early September in KY).

-Disease resistance - no phylosticta issues in a very wet year.  No BSD.

-No bitter aftertaste or metallic nasty flavors.

In 2026 we did a number of taste tests at pawpaw events to get fair and balanced public opinion, including knowledgeable heavy hitters in the 'pawpaw sphere'.  This is what the people said:

Dr. Kirk Pomper (KSU): 'It should be released.  It has no weird aftertaste.  Amazing, nice flavor.  Quite good, I must say'.  Timothy Lane and Matt Menegotto both gave it very high ratings, with Matt raving it had a 'killer balanced flavor'.  It was the standout favorite in the numerous taste tests.  People were literally begging for it to be released.  So, here it is!  

NATURALLY GROWN 

Pollination: An Ultra-Select seedling pawpaw or any other grafted cultivar or seedling pawpaw tree will pollinate it. For good pollination, plant trees 8-15 ft away from each other only. Pawpaws are not male and female, but rather have "male and female" flower parts on each flower. Every tree is capable of bearing fruit if pollinated well with pollen from another genetically different pawpaw tree. Hand pollination results in heaviest fruit set.

Ripening: Mid Season

Site requirements: Full sun location for best fruit production. Pawpaws will grow in shade but produce much less fruit. Pawpaws tolerate a range of soil types provided the planting location is well drained and there is heavy mulch and plenty of fertilizer and water. Protected locations, such as on the South, East or West side of a building is ideal on very windy sites and is recommended.

Size at maturity: 15-20′ tall and wide, depending on location, care and pruning to reduce height. We recommend heading them at about 8-10 ft tall and removing suckers, both of which keep the trees very manageable and small.
