An excellent, native, edible nut producing tree related to common 'Persian' or 'California' walnuts.  Easy and fast growing.  The copious nuts are hard-shelled, high protein, and delicious.  Fast to produce for a nut tree- only takes about 4-5 years for nut production to begin.  Interplanting with our black locust trees would increase walnut growth rate. The trees are typically little bothered by pests or diseases.

Due to black walnut trees and it's products exuding juglone, it is recommended to not plant black walnuts within 30 feet of gardens or other fruits or berries, as it can be detrimental to their growth.  Black raspberry and pawpaw are not affected by juglone.  A strong, mighty tree of the Eastern forests, and one that has many important uses.  Also good for reforestation and wildlife. Field grown from KY collected seed.

'Some people plant black walnuts in rows as a high value future timber crop.  Some even plant corn in between young black walnut rows for a few seasons as the trees grow larger.  Seeing that a single tree can be worth $1000 or substantially more within 25-30 years, and produces edible and marketable nuts, this could be a viable, relatively easy and profitable long-term ag investment strategy in my opinion.' - Blake Cothron
