A garlic lover's dream - true perennial garlic. Let me share with you the details of this truly incredible crop, because there's a lot to unpack.
First, this is an elephant garlic with delicious and mild garlic-y flavor. The massive stems are tender and can be eaten like leeks in Spring. Some of the mature bulbs will be one single, round, massive clove, while others will have 4-6 very large cloves (all can be replanted). It ripens at the same time as other garlic (June most areas).
When harvested, attached to the mature bulbs are tiny, khaki-colored baby bulbs (bulbils) attached by a little stem (see photo). These tiny mini bulbs can be planted in late summer/fall and will mature into full size garlic by next season. This variety also makes massive, tender scapes that bloom purple. When you harvest this garlic, inevitably some of the mini bulbs will break off and stay in the soil where they will sprout and mature- this guarantees it will come back year after year. This action of the mini bulbs breaking off and sprouting makes it perennial- you don't have to replant annually to have amazing garlic! This is one of our best and most interesting rare plants.
We were introduced to this amazing garlic many years ago by our friend and heirloom plant collector Jeremiah in Brodhead, KY. According to him, this Scottish garlic was brought over by his immigrant ancestors to Kentucky, where it has been a cherished family heirloom for generations. At marriage, the young woman was given a few precious cloves to start her own patch, and this way it has been preserved for quite some time. It was cherished for pickling among other things. Start your own traditions today with this amazing plant.
