Smaller dwarf variety aronia shrub only gets 3-4 ft tall and wide, with large black high quality berries.
Aronia melanocarpa. Easy to grow and highly resistant to insects and disease. Creamy white ornamental flower clusters decorate the aronia berry bush in April/May, followed by lovely purple-black berries in late summer. Fall foliage is known to change from bright green to a vibrant-red color, making the aronia berry bush very ornamental. Aronia is cold hardy and establishes easily.
The berries are an extremely rich source of antioxidants and vitamin C. They can be eaten fresh when ripe, where the flavor is sweet but slightly astringent, making fresh eating not the best use. However, they are best used in juices, wines, and VERY DELICIOUS purple jams chock-full of powerful antioxidants. They also dehydrate well and are bring sold online for high prices as a processed super fruit. Also excellent for establishing native plantings and other low-care, low-maintenance plantings. This has become one of our very favorite fruiting plants and is practically maintenance and trouble-free.
Aronia has been proven to have anti-cancer, anti-flu virus, anti-bacterial and more amazing health properties, including being hepa-protective (liver), anti- cholesterol and anti-arterial plaque, and much more which you can study here: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17408071/
