How does this work? Will the seeds come true to type?
We extract the seed from ripe fruits of that specific named cultivar of pawpaw tree. For example, we extract seed from 'KSU Chappell' fruits. Those seeds contain 'KSU Chappell' pawpaw genetics. Importantly, pawpaws are not like tomatoes or other crop seed that comes 'true to type'. So, 'KSU Chappell' seed has genetics that differ somewhat from the grafted 'KSU Chappell' parent tree. However, pawpaws come 'close to type' enough to reliably display distinct characteristics from the parent tree. Start with excellent seed, and there's a good chance you will get excellent results. The pawpaw 'doesn't fall that far from the tree' so to speak.

KSU Chappell: Open pollinated in PHN mother tree orchard and with advanced KSU selections.
KSU Benson: Open-pollinated with advanced KSU selections.
KSU Dunnigan: Open-pollinated with advanced KSU selections.
KSU Benson X KSU Chappell: An EPIC pawpaw cross sure to grow some champions.
'Blake's Breeder Select' is seed derived from the PHN R-Series of pawpaws; the very best seedlings currently fruiting at the PHN farm. Their 'Susquehanna' genetic base lends large size and amazing flavor. PHN Seraphim was selected from these outstandingly good genetics.
The other cultivar selections are each open-pollinated in our PHN mother tree orchard consisting of superior genetics and high quality named cultivars.
Planting:
We recommend planting in seedling containers in rich potting soil first and then planting these in the field or yard. Seedling trees must be grown in shade until 30 inches tall (year 2 or 3) and not in full sun and the containers must never dry out. If grown in pots, the pots must never freeze solid and should always be moist. They can also be direct-sown into very well-worked and fertile, well-draining soil. UV protection is a must in the field until around 30 inches tall. Growers have successfully grown rye grass as a cover crop amidst the pawpaw seedlings in the field to shield them from the sun.
