An epic 2016 release by the U of Saskatchewan. Large, fragrant berries with great flavor and slightly firm texture. Great blend of tangy and sweet; delicious! Large squarish berries with obviously larger size and more uniform shape than older honeyberry cultivars as well as more firm, so easier to pick and handle. Strong upright grower. Late blooming and late ripening (June in KY). We have noticed the 'Boreal' series are superior performers in fruit quality, fruit size, and other traits in our honeyberry trials here at PHN.
Ancestry is 50% Japanese, 25% Russian, 25% Kurile.

RECOMMENDED FOR ORGANIC GROWING
Pollination: Late blooming. Peak bloom is 4-7 days after Tundra and Indigo series. 'Boreal Beast' is an excellent pollinator, as are the Indigo types and other Boreal honeyberries. Requires about 1000-1200 chill hours.
Pest/Disease Resistance: Resistant to spring frosts and are not troubled by much in the way of disease and insects. Resistant to sunburn and powdery mildew. Poor airflow can lead to mildew on the leaves. Must be netted to avoid birds eating all the berries.
Ripening: Early Season (Mid-May or early June most areas).
Uses: Excellent fresh eating, great for freezing, jams, pies, etc. Makes great fruit leather, and a favorite of children.
Planting Site: Well-drained, rich soil, with full sun in northern locations and partial sun or 1/2 day sun in the Southeast.
Plant Size: 1-2' tall Start in 9 inch tree pot.
Zones 2-8
