Hummingbird magnets! Such a beautiful Kentucky native gem of a plant, wow! 'Firecracker' coral honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens) has become one of our favorite native flowering plants. We've been working on introducing this one for years, but had to figure out how to best propagate it first. Well, we figured it out!
The bloom time with this native vine is amazing: early March to November; we've even had blooms into January! Bloom time is a full 6-8+ months with colorful, exotic-looking blooms that are magnets for hummingbirds. Grows easily and rapidly -low care plant. Under good conditions, should bloom in 1-2 years from planting. Requires a fence, trellis, pergola or some kind of basic support. It's a climber!
Although it's a solid pollinator plant with amazing beauty and a striking appearance, it lacks fragrance, unlike the highly invasive Japanese honeysuckle vines found in the Eastern USA. It makes up for it -even the ornamental shiny blue-green foliage is lovely and persists for much of the year. Perfect for a pergola, native privacy screen, or anywhere you want a lovely native vine that grows reasonably fast. Produces tiny, inedible red berries birds will enjoy.
