Prunus americana Marsh., American plum, is a deciduous large shrub or small tree with a broad crown, reaching heights up to 15 feet. Fruits are red to yellow, almost globular edible plums about l inch in diameter. Flowers are white, 5-petaled, about 1 inch across, and borne singly or in clusters at the juncture of a stem and leaf. The fruits ripen in mid to late summer and will vary from yellow to red or purple. The fruit quality is generally good, although don't expect them to be quite like store bought plums, as they are much smaller and the eating quality can vary. Good for a number of things including low maintenance fruit production, processing, wildlife, or even as rootstock for grafting cultivated plums.
