One of the best native bee trees.  Fast growing & gorgeous native tree!  Also called yellow poplar, the tulip poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera), is honey-bee heaven. The lovely pollen-rich bloom arrives around May- early June and resemble magnolias, to which they're actually related (not a true poplar). The green-white petals look like they have flames painted on them. The trees are hardy, very fast growing and make a nice quality semi-hard wood timber after about 20 years.

The fast growing trees are a pioneer species and often show up on disturbed sites and rapidly create a young forest. They handle wet sites better than most. The large unusual leaves make excellent shade, are ornamental and highly attractive. Low-maintenance tree grows tall and strong. Just lovely, should be more widely planted. They make a lovely, fast growing, and easy, low-maintenance yard tree.  Reforest and landscape with this underrated tree!

They have a fleshy root system that doesn’t extend that far out, so well-worked soil is essential at planting. The tree tolerates drought poorly, so make sure it has access to water or give it supplemental irrigation in summer and early fall while it is establishing. The soil pH should be moderate to slightly acidic. Give lots of mulch.

Uses: Excellent shade tree, bee-tree (pollen and nectar), reforestation, landscaping, timber, firewood.

Site Selection: Sunny, well-drained site. Likes acidic soil, can handle slightly wetter sites.
