A reliable old standby and regional favorite for canning, cooking and storage.Originating in 1863 as a cross between an Asian pear and Bartlett. Considered "THE" canning pear. Kieffer's main attributes are reliability, extreme resilience to fire blight and disease, heavy yields, and dependability. It is crunchy, firm, and juicy, making it excellent and popular for canning, juicing, and processing. However, it is not for fresh dessert eating; processing and canning only. Keeps for a while in storage and can be eaten fresh once it softens a bit in storage. The fruit are large and plump.
Often found neglected on very old farms, it is often found still producing buckets of good pears even after decades of neglect. If you want a dependable workhorse of a pear and love canning, juicing, or crunchy pears look no further. Also makes an excellent deer-bait pear that handles neglect if that is something you're looking for. CANNOT SHIP TO CA.
