Hard to find! A little-known, amazing little native USA tree (or shrub), Allegheny chinkapin is basically a dwarf chestnut. VERY attractive to deer, turkeys, and is sweeter than Chinese chestnuts for human food. The chestnuts ripen in autumn, around October, and are about the size of your thumbnail, with a sweet, almond-like flavor. Grows about 6-30' tall but not nearly as big as Chinese chestnuts. Has some resistance to chestnut blight and is very survivable and tolerant of harsh conditions. Found growing wild from New Jersey to Florida. Very neat! Would be amazing if more people planted this tree and brought it back from it's nearly endangered status. Will strongly attract deer and turkeys to your property. Field Grown. Castanea pumila.
