Serviceberry (Amelanchier arborea)

Out of stock

Serviceberries are really wonderful and you have to grow (or forage) your own to enjoy them! Think sweet, juicy blueberries with tiny almonds for seeds. Juicy, sweet and refreshing blueberry/ grapey flavor, with crunchy little seeds that taste like almonds. Easy to grow! This is the native tree form serviceberry. Can be pruned as a shrub. Wildlife and birds LOVE serviceberries. These were once popular human food in our area, (old-timers still ask us sometimes about “sarvis berry”). These are related to blueberries, apple, pear, etc. and show it in their lovely foliage and beautiful, apple-like blooms in early spring. Very few disease and insect problems most years. Very cold hardy. Similar species are grown as a commercial berry crop in Canada.

Uses: Delicious berries, wildlife, landscaping, reforestation.

Pollination: Self-pollinating

Plant Size: 18″-36″ tall Bare-Root Tree

Zones: 4-8 (Estimate)
