Up to ONE POUND fruits of grade A+ quality! Hailing from Berea, KY (Madison County), Nyomi’s Delicious is definitely one of the best pawpaw cultivars in the world. It is early-ripening, usually ripening fruit in Berea by mid-late August. Fruits show a light color break to yellow at ripening, and it tends strongly towards single-fruit bearing and is very productive. Fruits are plump, can get quite large at around 1 POUND each, averaging about 6-12 ounces or so. Behind the thin skin is a delicious, thick and extra-custardy flesh that is yellow-orange, with a mild and very pleasant, sweet flavor that is just delicious. Very low seed weight and count. The mild flavor would widely appeal to people that are turned off by strong pawpaw flavors. Nurseryman Cliff England, who introduced this pawpaw variety, met an elderly woman in Berea, KY named Nyomi who had this beloved tree growing in her backyard (charmingly claiming to have a “magical cancer-killing fruit tree”), and subsequently introduced it into the nursery trade. This cultivar shows good disease resistance and is a vigorous, strong, fast grower. This is our favorite pawpaw variety. A must-have!
Pollination: An Ultra-Select seedling pawpaw or any other grafted or seedling pawpaw tree will pollinate. For good pollination, plant trees 8-15 ft away from each other only. Pawpaws are not male and female, but rather have “male and female” flower parts on each flower. Every tree is capable of bearing fruit if pollinated well with pollen from another genetically different pawpaw tree. Hand pollination results in heaviest fruit set.
Resistant to: Pawpaws are generally remarkably disease and insect resistant. See our pawpaw growing article for full information.
Ripening: Early Season (Late August in KY)
Site requirements: Full sun location for best fruit production. Pawpaws will grow in shade but produce much less fruit. Pawpaws tolerate a range of soil types provided the planting location is well drained and there is heavy mulch and plenty of fertilizer and water. Protected locations, such as on the South, East or West side of a building is ideal on very windy sites are recommended.
Size at maturity: 15-20′ tall and wide, depending on location, care and pruning to reduce height. We recommend heading them at about 10″ and removing suckers, both of which keep the trees very manageable and small.
Hardiness: USDA zones 5-9.
Plant size: Grafted, 12″-2 FT tall in tree pot, with an excellent root system. CHOOSE SIZE
