Description

The multipurpose plant you need to partner with your fruit trees! See photo of comfrey interplanted with an Asian pear. Comfrey serves many purposes: out-competes weeds, attracts and feeds bees and pollinators and serves as a natural fertilizer plant! Grows extremely fast!

Comfrey is a well-known garden plant for these reasons, as well as by herbal medicine practitioners who value it highly for it’s roots which are used to help quickly heal cuts, scrapes and even fractures. In permaculture it is known as an important “guild” plant, which is essentially a little garden of tough perennial plants grown under fruit trees that outcompetes grass and weeds and offer beneficial properties to your trees. It’s also one of the easiest and most robust, survivable plants you can grow. The leaves, when slashed up to 3-4 times per year and left at the base of the tree, serve as natural fertilizer, because the very deep taproots of comfrey accumulate subsoil minerals and also nitrogen. They make a good compost plant as well. Hard to find! We propagate our own comfrey from our non-seed producing Bocking 14 plants in our Naturally Grown orchards. Sterile varieties are often preferred as they do not go to seed and thus spread. You will find comfrey a very fun, useful, extremely easy-to-grow, long-lived and hardy plant for your orchard and garden.
