Enjoy delicious edible greens on this perennial shrub! Arugula tree (Toona sinensis) AKA “Fragrant Spring Tree” grows beautiful lacy EDIBLE foliage on a low-maintenance, easy-to-grow shrub. Insect, disease and trouble-free plant. The leaves, best eaten when new and red from about April-June, are tender, chewy and have a robust, savory flavor akin to arugula and roasted garlic/popcorn. They are delicious raw and also good in stir fries and other dishes.
This shrub lives for many years and will provide edible greens for many years from a single planting. Sounds almost too good to be true, yet it’s real! Arugula tree makes a nice addition to any garden, permaculture project or edible landscaping because it is easy and quick to grow, easy to maintain at a small size and the leaves, similar in appearance to neem, are quite attractive. Care-free and extremely easy to grow. Can be kept a dwarf size through yearly dormant season pruning back to a 3-5 feet height. Left alone will get about 20 ft tall or so.

Site Selection: Plant in a very sunny, open spot with excellent water drainage.
