Description
Chinese chestnuts (Castanea mollissima) are an easy-to-grow, fast growing and highly productive tree that has many uses. The nuts are the most desirable and are a rich starchy food that are delicious roasted or made into many dishes, including gluten-free breads. They have the nutrition of brown rice. The trees attract lots of deer in early-mid fall. They are resistant to the blight that decimated the native chestnut population. More and more these are being considered as great candidates for silvopasture and commercial tree crop production. They produce nuts in as little as 2-4 years from planting. Very satisfying and profitable tree to grow. You need at least 2 for cross pollination. Plant each tree about 20-25 ‘ apart. These are cold-hardy, KY-grown Chinese Chestnut seedlings from KY-produced nuts. They require very careful transplanting and need mulch and organic fertilizer to thrive. Easy to grow organically. Plant on a warm, sunny site with good water drainage.
