Description

If you want to grow organic, choose Stayman Winesap. Understandably a legendary heirloom apple: Stayman Winesap was once the #1 most planted commercial apple being grown in Kentucky. This is because of it’s superior qualities and adaption to this region. First, Stayman is highly disease resistant to common apple diseases including the dreaded cedar apple rust, fireblight and mildew. Not an issue on Stayman. Next, the tree is EXTREMELY productive of medium-large apples. The fruit quality is excellent, being a smooth blend of sweet and mild tartness that makes good apples so good. More sweet for sure, and very pleasing texture is crisp yet not hard. Stayman is versatile; excellent dessert eating, epic cider, juicing and even good for pies!

Resistant to cedar apple rust, mildew and fire blight. Strong, sturdy grower, heavy producing. Adaptable to many soils and climates. Showy pink spring blossoms require a pollinator. Well-adapted to central and southeastern US conditions. This apple originated in Kansas in 1866 as a seedling of the original Winesap. One of the best apples for self-sufficiency and homesteading, as well as backyard use.

Very good keeper and late season harvester; fruit which is not harvested in a timely manner can sometimes crack, but remains good for home-use. Mid-season blooms can avoid spring frosts.

A first-rate apple variety for backyard and market which comes highly recommend.
